Historical Epics

I've noticed that during the past 5 years, we've been treated with the likes of 2 Roman Empire epics (Gladiator & King Arthur), a Medieval times epic (the upcoming Kingdom of God), a Revolutionary War epic (The Patriot), an American immigration epic (Gangs of New York), an ancient China epic (Hero), an Ancient Babylonia/Mesopotamia epic (Alexander), an American colonization epic (The New World), a Feudal Japan epic (The Last Samurai), a biblical epic (The Passion of the Christ), and one Greek war epic (Troy).

I think all that's missing is a big ol' Egyptian Empire epic (sorry, The Scorpion King doesn't count), and then we can start all over again with the Civil War.

NOTE: I really wanted to mention Braveheart, but it came out 10 years ago!!! I can't believe it!

Some people are such jerks

You ask them one little question and they act like you've made a HUGE imposition.

But I guess some days, out of context, I can come off as a huge jerk, too.

How can I look alterna if everyone else looks alterna?

The methods we used ten years ago to identify alterna-kids have to be retired because I've noticed that fashion-wise, everyone dresses like an alterna-kid. Maybe it's because it's just that time.... you know, every few years, the dominant culture co-opts the styles and fashions of various subcultures, and soon, (for example) everyone is wearing Chuck Taylors. (Now, that is a very OLD example, since I started wearing All-Stars again in 1994 when they became popular again for the 3rd time.)

My personal definition of "alterna-" dates back to 1994 when I became sub-culturally aware. I surrounded myself with these so-called Alterna-boys and Alterna-girls, thinking that we were at the cutting edge of fashion, music, and literature. Of course, to the true originators, we were totally posers. I realize that now. I mean, if I lived in New York City, instead of Kansas, I would probably have had more license to claim residence on "the cutting edge."

Anyway, fashions are changing. I wonder what kids will dress like in 5 years.

Revisionist

You notice how they completely edited out the booing at the Orange Bowl during this week's episode of The Ashlee Simpson Show? Lame.

Culturally, we may be at our lowest point. Everything has been fractionalized (is that even a word?) so various groups can partake in their section of popular culture. Obviously, Ashlee's reality show is only targeting her fans because who else wouldn't care if they left out the fact that she was booed and ridiculed for having a shitty performance? (I watched the footage from that godawful attempt at singing! Don't try to mislead me into believing it didn't happen!)

Maybe I'm just having a bad TV day... I mean, my eyes and ears were just assailed by the likes of Simpson and her horrible big sis, then the Duff sisters shilling for IceBreakers, and THEN, as I made a break for it and switched to CNN, the doughy, giant-ass face of Jeb Bush. What the hell?!

This is better anyway.

"Of course. Of course. Why not? If you're gonna be a pedophile, if you're gonna be Jack the Ripper, if you're gonna be a murderer, it's not a good idea. That I'm not. That's how we were raised. And I met — I didn't sleep in the bed with the child. Even if I did, it's okay. I slept on the floor."

Tearing out my hair... A haunted house

More creepy dreams. This time, I was in a house that was haunted by multiple spirits. In the dream immediately following that, I was sitting on a staircase, hiding from everyone, wallowing in my own self-pity and slowly tearing strands of natural hair out from my head.

Cranky

No wonder my teeth were falling out in my dreams... Lately, I've been pretty cranky. Nearly everything cheeses me off. This was not the case last year. I was pretty happy. I thought I was happy this year, too, but now, I never know what's gonna set me off.

Unfortunately, some of my peers have been at the receiving end of my fury. Not to mention a few strangers.

All I want is for someone to understand what I'm talking about and where I'm coming from. I feel like I am screaming at the top of my lungs, and no one can hear me.
